NOVEL STARTERS

One of the members of our writers' group has been researching the first sentence and paragraphs in novels as he tries to nail the opening to his first chapter.

On Monday he presented everyone with a novel and we each read the first sentence aloud to the group. We learned that usually the first sentence introduces the theme and the protagonist and the first paragraph fixes the setting at the very least.

Both have a strong promise/hook that urges the reader to read more.

QUESTIONS:
  • How does your opening stack up?
  • What further guidance can you provide for my blog readers?
